News: The Get Up Kids played that reunion show

Nov 17, 08

Matt Pryor hinted at the fact that there would be more than just one reunion show from the gang known as The Get Up Kids as he was leaving the stage of the Record Bar in Kansas City last night, after the group finished playing their first show together since 2005 and, according to Pryor, the first time he and Jim Dewees had really seen each other in two years.  They got on stage to a packed house, played through the entirety of Something To Write Home About, front-to-back, and a five-song encore and the deed was done.  We'll see you in 09, we're sure of it.

CONTESTS: Remix The 87 Stick Up Kids & get on a limited 12"

Nov 17, 08

Party rap is an interesting conundrum.  On one hand, party kids will love you and exalt you and defend you to their non-partying friends.  On the other hand, kids who take their shit too seriously and don't want to give respect and credit and worth to artists of the so-called genre are way harsh and can sometimes be total dicks.  The group from LA called The 87 Stick Up Kids seriously call into question this argument.  They're totally party rap kids, but we around these parts feel like, much as Spank Rock and The Cool Kids and a handful of other wily kids have done, they've gone far and above the call of making just plain dance floor bangers that you'll forget about in 2 days.

Anyhow, the guys at URB are now running a contest to accompany the release of the group's first release, "Stoops And Basements", to get the word out to everyone who knows their way (or maybe not) around Pro Tools, Ableton, whatever.  If you win, you get your track on a limited 12" vinyl pressing of the single, which is totally amazing.

News: The Prairie Hotel to finally release 2 EPs in January

Nov 17, 08

Sweaty dance floor gems like those found on Chicago-bred The Prairie Cartel's first works, the two EPs titled affectionately EP1 and EP2, aren't so dime-a-dozen anymore.  Where most acts would be fine with making banal pieces that get kids dancing, The Prairie Cartel know that behind the beat, the driving guitars and basslines and the panting, riot-inducing vocals, there is a sort of punk ethos of tearing down the usual conceptions people have of what it means to really love disco.  They weren't alive probably when there was that "disco sucks" backlash, but if they were we know we'd find them hording their 12"s in a pile alongside Suicide b-sides and Max's Kansas City bootlegs.  EP1 and EP2 see release January 27.

mp-FREE: Chromeo - "100% (Treasure Fingers remix)"

Nov 16, 08

The sexiest track (and closer) on last year's Fancy Footwork gets a little sexier, as Fool's Gold just released a trio of remixes of Chromeo's "100%".  Alongside the Treasure Fingers take there's also a version by Trackademicks and Nacho Lovers, both of which can be found really quite easily.  Here's what A-TRAK, head of Fool's Gold, had to say about the three remixes:

I'm surprised we didn't do this earlier! Chromeo is my brother with our childhood friend, Fool's Gold is my label... It's only natural to get Fool's Gold producers to remix Chromeo. Yet it took Bacardi to make it happen. Bacardi's B-Live program brings you these funkier-than-thou remixes of the slick album closer ‘100%’. You all know Treasure Fingers from his infectious two-stepper ‘Cross The Dancefloor’ and multiple remixes as of late. If you're up on your new releases you probably heard Nacho Lovers' inaugural and timeless single ‘Acid Life’. And to flip things a little we recruited Bay Area rapper-slash-producer Trackademicks, whose single ‘Enjoy What You Do’ is just about to drop! Start downloading.... NOW.

mp-FREE: Tim London - "Flight 210 (featuring Simba)"

Nov 16, 08

A narrator tells the story of a kiss that saves the plane carrying his loved one from crashing into Mt. Fuji.  That, at the core, is what "Flight 210", a downtempo, completely pop song from Tim London, is all about.  But rather than sheer somber feelings and a sense of accomplishment, the vocals from the track (courtesy of Simba) are plaintive and monotone, almost as if this success comes with a darker lining.

Live: Steve Burns wants you to choose your own adventure

Nov 14, 08

Steve Burns is not in HEARTSREVOLUTION.  Steve Burns is not electro.  Steve Burns is, though, most well-known for being that Steve.  You know, that one, the Steve from one of children's televisions most beloved shows, "Blue's Clues".

And while he's dumped the bowl cut and rugby-striped button-up, he has retained the one thing which made that show, er, great: his knack for storytelling.  So, it should come as no surprise then, that if he'd ever strike out on his own, sans cartoon dog, and started slinging around guitars and writing rock songs, he'd have some epic ideas, yeah?  We couldn't be more right in thinking this.  Because, according to the video above, Burns wants to change the way we view live shows from bands, taking it from performer and audience and into the realm of performer and, dare we say it, participant.  And he'll take his experiment to all of you adoring (and maybe confused?) kids in Brooklyn on November 20 at Union Hall.

Photos: mtvU's Woodie Awards after party

Nov 14, 08

We're not going to go into too much detail (we're not into live-blogging), but let's just say that this year's mtvU Woodie Awards was quite the exercise in restraint.  On our part, that is.  The performances were, for the most part, very well done.  Lykke Li doing "Can I Kick It?" with Q-Tip and Chromeo doing their own vocoder assistance to (gulp) Vampire Weekend's "The Kids Don't Stand A Chance" were the highlights, and some band called All Time Low was just flat out terrible.  What's happened to rock music?  Dear Fugazi, please come back.  Please?

The awards themselves were terribly long and arduous to get through, even if we were all VIP'd up and whatnot.  No one read from the prompters (good luck editors!!), everyone was drunk as fuck, total douchebaggery was felt all around (Ed. note: we're looking at you, Boys Like Girls) and Chromeo were the only performers who actually won anything.  The Cool Kids, to open the show, brought a bunch of hangers-on onstage with them for "Delivery Man" and that was pretty much a signifier for what was to come.  No one could hear anything that anyone said and we were at our happiest when the video screens cut "Womanizer" out to bring on a Rick-rolling.  We didn't take any photos during the show (go fig), but here's about three dozen shots from the only-going-to-gorge-on-free-food-and-booze after party.
